The student will arrange for their Proposal Defense under the guidance of their Dissertation Committee and Mentor. If an extenuating circumstance will prevent a Committee member from being physically present, the Associate Dean of the Graduate School may authorize members of the Committee to participate remotely. Written permission from the author is required to make a restricted thesis or dissertation available before the restriction period expires. The project requires an oral presentation of the proposal and an oral presentation and defense of the finished product. Faculty who maintain an adjunct appointment may continue as an Associate member and thus can chair a thesis committee but not a dissertation committee. As of the Fall semester, physical copies are no longer created. In some cases, you may be able to order the full-text electronically. They are available for researcher use in the Maryland Room of Hornbake Library. The dissertation should be prepared in accordance with the guidelines published in the latest edition of the " University of Maryland Thesis Manual ". Upon receipt of these forms by the Graduate School, the Report of Examining Committee Form and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Final Doctoral Oral Examination are sent to the graduate faculty member selected to represent the Dean at the defense. Dissertation Defense Form, completed by the student, is also submitted to the Graduate School so that it may be distributed to the academic community.
As of the Fall semester, physical copies are no longer created. The dissertation committee chair must be a full-time faculty member, or a core faculty member who has received approval from the committee on graduate studies at Loyola.
The time limit for this rule shall be two 2 years with an option for the program to reconfirm for additional two-year periods. Special Graduate Faculty status is not required.
It is expected that the dissertation project be of publishable quality that is, in the form of a journal or book chapter, or a report for local consumption by practitioners or an agency serving mental health needs and that an extensive review of theory and previous research serve as a foundation. Upon receipt of these forms by the Graduate School, the Report of Examining Committee Form and Guidelines for the Conduct of the Final Doctoral Oral Examination are sent to the graduate faculty member selected to represent the Dean at the defense. Requests should be placed at least 2 business days prior to your visit to guarantee that they will be available in the Maryland Room for your use. The Examination Committee is chaired by the Dissertation Advisor, who also determines the time and place of the defense. The student will arrange for their Proposal Defense under the guidance of their Dissertation Committee and Mentor. A Certification of Completion of Doctoral Dissertation Form must be submitted to the Graduate School by the Committee Chairperson and the readers of the thesis at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date of examination. At least three of the five Examining Committee members must approve a passing grade. The doctoral dissertation may consist of, but is not limited to: the implementation and evaluation of a clinical intervention or training program, or evaluation of a pre-existing program e.
The Committee members are the only faculty present at the examination and they alone are responsible for evaluating it.
A student may defend a dissertation no more than twice. Students may petition the director of clinical training for permission to have one of their committee members be someone other than a faculty member of Loyola's psychology department.
The Vice Chancellor is required to notify all members of the Graduate Faculty at least two weeks before each examination. This matching process will take place for those entering into the first year of the curriculum in the spring of that first year and for those entering into the second year of the curriculum during that first fall semester.
